Children’s Occupational Therapy Assessments

Occupational Therapy assessments are individualized and based on the needs of each infant or child. Occupational Therapists focus on “skills for everyday living”.  Infants and children who benefit from having Occupational Therapy may be experiencing difficulty with:

  • fine motor skills

  • gross motor skills

  • sensory processing skills

  • self-care skills

Assessments will include evaluation of a infant or child’s physical, emotional and cognitive abilities. The environment they live, work and play will also be considered. A family’s concerns will also be discussed during this process. Time required to complete an Occupational Therapy assessment will vary depending on the needs of each child.

Children’s Occupational Therapy Treatments

Occupational Therapy treatments are customized to meet the unique needs of each infant or child. The assessment is the beginning process to develop appropriate treatment goals. Treatment goals will be made in collaboration with each family. 

The frequency (how often) and duration (length of time) of each Occupational Therapy treatment program will vary depending on the goals and the needs of each child. An example treatment program may be once per week for 8 weeks with home program exercises and then a re-evaluation. 

A variety of play based activities are used during the therapy sessions based on a child’s interests and the goals of therapy. Each child will be supported to participate in a fun way so they engage in the process and builds confidence along the way.
